Europe trots out fillies and mares that thrash the males on a regular basis and still American horsemen/women shy away from making it a regular habit.Brian Appletonhttp://railrunner.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1354333762076619269.post-70133380451818831672010-09-14T06:14:50.142-04:002010-09-14T06:14:50.142-04:00"We are disproportionately obsessed with 3-ye..."We are disproportionately obsessed with 3-year-old males on their quest for the Triple Crown, yet fail to appreciate the fine performances of fillies that, in some cases, are not entered in the Kentucky Derby because of old-fashioned notions"

Hear, hear!

But there is a hen-and-egg quality there. Some recent filly crops were doubtlessly outstanding, but how are we supposed to appreciate the quality of those fillies if their own connections don't seem to believe in it, be it for old-fashioned notions or merely because it's so much easier to make a lot of money with the dozens of cheap F&M G1 races around?malcerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02913127739083446726noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1354333762076619269.post-85763202302042194772010-09-13T22:32:28.153-04:002010-09-13T22:32:28.153-04:00I just read Jay's article off your link. First...I just read Jay's article off your link. First a rant: the DRF page features a large photo of Ron Gierkink next to the article, making it look like Ron wrote the piece instead of Jay!

And if Jay's premise is correct that Magna will siphon better runners from the Derby to the Preakness, then how can he expect future Derby winners to be better if the current ones aren't that great without the MI bonus?

And wasn't it @o_crunk that first brought up this issue of poor form of recent Derby winners? Is Jay on Twitter following Chris for story ideas?

I think you hit it on the nail, Val, about the speed breeding. Many win on class, but they've shot their loads coz they just weren't bred to get the trip.

And the examples you've used are right on, too, as well as our insistence that the fillies not get the same accolades as the colts when many are just as good, with some actually better.sid fernandohttp://www.sidfernando.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
