A Good Week—AustrAmerican Style

Nay, Bob Scarborough is having a very good week.

Last Saturday, his 5-year-old mare Mauralakana earned back her $900,000 November 2007 Keeneland auction price (in less than a year), impressively winning the G1 Beverly D. She also officially received a reprieve from broodmare duties (reportedly to Mr. Greeley) with a new destination in mind: the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Then, this Saturday, his promising Australian 4-year-old Light Fantastic sprung a mild upset, defeating 6-time G1 winner (and the world’s 8th-ranked horse) Weekend Hussler in the G2 Liston Stakes. Talk about a dynamic race! The two battled through the stretch, but the gray had just a bit more.

Come October, Mr. Scarborough is going to have a tough decision to make—while Mauralakana is running at Santa Anita on Friday, a few hours later Light Fantastic will be going post-ward at Moonee Valley in the G1 Cox Plate. Actually, it probably is a no-brainer that he’ll stay in Australia—as chairman of Moonee Valley Racing Club, the AU$3 million Cox Plate is THE most prestigious race Down Under. Still, a nice dilemma to have.
