Weekend Hussler Returns

The world’s eighth-ranked horse (130 Timeform) and number one-ranked horse in Australia, Weekend Hussler, begins his four-year-old campaign this Saturday (Friday evening here in the U.S.) in the G2 Liston Stakes at Caulfield. Weekend Hussler won a record six G1 races as a three-year-old, and is morning line 4-5 for the Liston, although apparently not everyone is on board the Hussler bandwagon.

According to reports, Sydney’s biggest punter Sean Bartholomew thinks Weekend Hussler is “over-rated” and is pegging the up-and-coming (and undefeated) gray Light Fantastic to spring an upset. It certainly seems like a possibility given that Weekend Hussler popped a hoof abscess earlier this week, but he’s scheduled to be vetted before the race.

In all, seven of the eleven Liston runner are G1 winners (including Victoria Derby champ Kibbutz, Thorndon Mile winner Sir Slick, Yalumba Stakes victor Maldivian, Whakanui Stud International Stakes champ Mission Critical, and multiple New Zealand G1 winner Alamosa). Another prominent entry, former Aidan O’Brien trainee Alexander of Hales, now trained by Danny O’Brien, finished second behind stablemate Soldier of Fortune in last year’s G1 Irish Derby.

  1. What do you think about Weekend Hussler's dodgy foot?

  2. Well, I took a chance on the grey Light Fantastic (5-2) due to the foot, and it paid off. Plus, I'm just a sucker for greys, what can I say :)
