Two siblings of notable horses broke their maidens recently. Last Friday, with Rajiv Maragh up, Teuflesberg’s full-sister Phi Beta Mom ($12.00) won a 7f turf MSW at Belmont. On Wednesday, Eibar Coa rode Kristi With a K—half-sister to recently-retired G1 winning turfster Bit of Whimsy—to victory, paying $10.60 for winning an 8.5f turf MSW at Belmont.
Bsharpsonata worked 3f in 39:87 (4/5) at Saratoga last Saturday, her first posted workout since transferring to Todd Pletcher’s barn in late July. She was turned out for a spell after her disappointing last place finish (as the favorite) in the G2 Black-Eyed Susan in May. Unfortunately, it certainly doesn’t appear that she’ll be back in time for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Classic. Incidentally, her dam Apasionata Sonata will be offered at the Keeneland November sale (Hip #267), in foal to Pulpit, also the sire of Bsharpsonata.
Another Pulpit 2-year-old I’m anxiously awaiting on debut is Treasure Trail who worked 4f in 51:09 (19/36) at Saratoga on Tuesday. Her famous siblings? Oh, a couple G1 winners named Balance and Zenyatta.
Kiaran McLaughlin also has Xtra Heat’s 2-year-old daughter Elusive Heat back in training after an apparent break; she posted an impressive bullet 4f in 47:87 (1/27) at Belmont on Tuesday.
