Welcome to the Shore

No, not Monmouth! Today is opening day at Presque Isle on the shores of Lake Erie, with first post at 5:30 p.m. It will be interesting to see if the track bias matches last year’s inaugural meet. If so, avoid the rail (it was dead), and bet early speed.

The featured race is the $100,000 Inaugural Stakes, including several nice three-year-old sprinting fillies. American County, winner of the Sunshine Million Oaks back in January, is the morning line 2-1 favorite, but frankly, I’m inclined to favor Tom Amoss-trained Ride Em Cowgirl, who twice raced over this surface last September. From the far outside, Psycho DJ also looks extremely promising in her first effort over the Tapeta; runners of her sire Indian Charlie have been winners nearly 40% on all-weather surfaces. For the current list of leading North American All Weather Sires, look here.
