Winter of Our Discontent

Time again, fellow handicappers, for the Daily Racing Form’s Public Handicapper “Winter of Our Discontent” contest, which begins with four Saturday stakes races: Aqueduct’s The Mellow Roll and Garland of Roses, and Calder’s My Charmer and Tropical Turf. To enter the content, register here. Brisnet past performances for all four races are available from the TBA homepage here. While you are there, please take part in our survey poll and spend some time perusing the excellent collection of blogs that make up our ever-growing group.

Nice to see Dawn After Dawn back in action on Friday, winning a $50K AOC race at Hollywood Park in near track record time for the 6-1/2 furlongs (1:14.03). She was last seen finishing seventh in the G2 Delaware Oaks on July 14, but this marks her first start in California for new trainer John Sadler who indicates that she will next point towards the G1 Le Brea Stakes at Santa Anita on December 29. She finished fourth in the G1 Kentucky Oaks, behind Rags to Riches, Octave and High Heels, back in May. However, this filly first caught my attention with her impressive appearance closing for third in the G1 Ashland Stakes on April 7, behind winner Christmas Kid and runner-up Octave, whose jockey Garrett Gomez was on Dawn After Dawn this day. Here’s a replay of that performance:

Her good form on the Polytrack at Keeneland appears to be the reason behind sending her to California—artificial surface heaven—this winter. Considering she’s inbred 5 x 4 to Northern Dancer, and her strong turf pedigree on her dam side (with Forli and Sword Dance), perhaps it’s not surprising that she’d perform well in routes on artificial surfaces, so I look forward to her four-year-old campaign as well.

Congratulations to fellow TBA blogger Tote Board Brad; his filly Super Likit won race 7 at Golden Gate Fields on Friday, paying $10.20 for the victory. Awesome!

Let's hear it for the Dawn after Dawn Appreciation Society! I noticed her win yesterday too, very exciting.

Man, I really liked her in the beginning of last year. I spied her in the Tiffany Lass and had her across the board. I also had her across the board in Delaware Oaks.

Her performance in the Kentucky Oaks actually wasn't so bad, it looked to me like she got stuck in traffic just when she started her run. I don't think she could have caught R2R but I think she could have hit the board.

I'm with you, can't wait to see her as a 4yo, looks like they've got great plans for her!

Plus that Kentucky Oaks' track was mucky, so I don't count that against her either. Sad, isn't it, when we have only three-year-old fillies to look forward to maturing into four-year-olds, not colts who have rushed off to the breeding shed?
