Crazy Eights Redux

Horseplayers can be a superstitious lot, particularly when it comes to numbers so with Friday being 8/8/08, no doubt there were some over-bet #8 horses. Unfortunately, to no avail it appears, as most tracks (including Arlington, Finger Lakes, Emerald Downs, Evangeline, Hastings, Louisiana Downs, Penn National, Presque Isle, Sam Houston, Saratoga, Suffolk, Thistledown, and Woodbine) had no #8 winners at all.

Del Mar’s sole #8 winner was the high-weight filly Lethal Heat ($6.20) who broke her own track record (1:21.95) defeating all-male competition in the Real Good Deal Stakes.

If you were one of those bettors hooked on winning #8, your best tracks were:

• Mountaineer, with Slew’s True Halo ($7.20, race 3), Gregs Bluemillions ($3.60, race 6), and Mona Lisa Vito ($25.80, race 7).

• Canterbury, with Classic Trouble ($6.80, race 3), Unbridled Ann ($7.60, race 7) and Beaver Lakes Best ($9.60, race 8).

• Charles Town, with chalky payouts on Winter Mambo ($4.60, race 4), Special Union ($4.20, race 7) and Bear’slittlebeauty ($5.00, race 8).

Big win payouts, however, were few and far between, with the best being Key on Me ($45.20, Arapahoe race 2); Four Ninety Nine B ($30.00, Bay Meadows race 7); Jj Rocky Top ($23.20, Blue Ribbon Downs race 4); and Bye Sweetie ($20.40, Los Alamitos race 3).

Don’t worry if you were disappointed; 9/9/09 is just around the corner.
