Quick Sunday Wrap-up

Saratoga’s over. Now it feels like the end of summer. [Edited to say it's a Monday wrap-up, not Sunday. Damn these holiday weekends :)]

Surprising, I had a good day betting. I’ve never played a Pick-3 in my life, but should have given it a try today as I cashed win bets on Hostess ($8.50), Salute the Count ($20.80) and Vineyard Haven ($20.40) at Saratoga—the Pick-3 sequence paid $1,786. I just love Hostess and her Mauralakana form plus love of longer distances made her look tough here. Bond scratched her from the G1 Sword Dancer when the turf came up soft, but staying with the girls paid off today when she broke an 11-year turf course record winning the G3 Glens Falls.

Vineyard Haven I played solely based on the switch to Alan Garcia. Break Water Edison isn’t a lightweight, so if Garcia preferred Frankel’s colt, I was willing to forgive the third place effort last out in the mud.

Salute the Count? He recently finished just a head behind First Defence in the G3 Jaipur and after First Defence’s performance yesterday romping in the G1 Forego...he just appeared to be a logical selection based on class. Plus, I had used the same angle playing True to Tradition ($12.60 win) in the Turf Monster Handicap at Philly—thank you, Kendrick Carmouche!

Unfortunately, Unbridled Belle’s half-brother Stones River couldn’t get it done in the G2 Pennsylvania Derby, but his fourth place finish beat nine other more experienced runners. I’m kicking myself for ignoring Anak Nakal, particularly since I didn’t notice Joe Bravo up. Still, is the PA Derby even relevant to any discussion of top three-year-olds?
