Most Impressive Filly and Mares Races of 2008—Battles Royal

I don’t favor one particular type of race over another; a wire-to-wire winner can be just as thrilling as a deep closer, and sometimes the dominating performance is surpassed by the ding-dong, nose-to-nose, battle royal. For that latter category, let me present the following candidates:

1. Intangaroo, Baroness Thatcher and Hystericalady, in G1 Humana Distaff, Churchill—May 3

Three-way photo at the wire; can’t get much better than that.

2. Zenyatta and Tough Tiz’s Sis, in G1 Vanity, Hollywood—July 5

Had she not been interfered with by the slowing Silver Z, Tough Tiz’s Sis may have caught Zenyatta this day. Gutsy, gutsy effort.

3. Proud Spell and Music Note, in G1 Alabama, Saratoga—August 16

It didn’t get any better than this as Proud Spell refused to let Music Note pass her as they battled down the stretch.

4. Ginger Punch over Lemon Drop Mom, in G1 Personal Ensign, Saratoga—August 22

Game Ginger Punch attempting to stretch out beyond what was believed to be her limit, and winning by a nose over a much-improved Lemon Drop Mom
